When I lived on Rose Heyworth Road during World War II I used to go up the Arael with my friends to pick winberries for my mother to put in a tart. I think I went up the mountain with my friends Judith Morrell, Shirley and Meryl Davies, maybe also members of the Rees family from the bakery. We moved to Newport in 1944 and I have hardly ever been back to Aber but I've never forgotten the Arael and my pals from the war years.

I have recently been given a photoof my cousin's grandfather - William Panes who worked a this pit prior to the 1930s. there are a number of others in the photo. William was in charge ofthe winding house. I would gladly share the image with anyone who may know of his co-workers.
